Although it s hard to look at a site and immediately detect that it is a Drupal site, there is an excellent resource that will help you find sites that were built on Drupal. Dries Buytaert, the creator of Drupal, maintains a fairly up-to-date list of very high-profile web sites that are built on Drupal. You can find that list on his personal web site at http://buytaert.net/tag/drupal-sites. Dries does an excellent job of capturing a broad spectrum of sites from various industries and sites from all around the world. The list is updated constantly, so it is a good idea to bookmark that page and to visit it frequently. By scanning through the list of sites that Dries has compiled (currently well over 100), you can quickly get a sense for the types of sites that people have successfully built on Drupal. By looking at other sites, you can get inspiration for design (the visual look of the site), layout (how the pages are structured), organization (how content is displayed), and the features and functions that have been deployed. Looking at other sites is a common starting point for many people who are embarking on a new Drupal project.

You can see that I use the vertical gradient image and that I repeat it in the x direction to fill out the cell. Notice also that I have padding around the menu to keep the text from reaching the edge of the gradient image.

A third option, available also through both Java SE and EE environments, is to look up the EntityManagerFactory, or the EntityManager itself, through Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI). Listing 3-15 shows an example of how this is done from within a session bean.

At this point, you have completed the skin (you still have the container to do), and it is time to test it. The first thing you have to do is package the skin for export. If you are an old hand at working with .NET, you know that you can very easily create an install for a DLL or program that you created. You also know that you need a manifest file that contains all kinds of information about your program. The guys at DotNetNuke decided against this. They decided to package skins and containers in a .zip file. Personally, I agree with this approach. It is very easy to implement and maintain. Now you need to create a .zip file for your new skin.

One of the benefits of using Drupal is that it is a constantly evolving platform. As new concepts are defined on the Web, Drupal is often one of the first content management systems to employ those capabilities. Keeping up with the changes is relatively simple: just check http://drupal.org/project/modules and look at the latest modules and updates posted to the site. (See Figure15-1.)

Clicking on this option sorts the list of modules in date-descending order, with the last modules posted to the site listed first. Depending on how frequently you visit the site, you may only have to spend a minute or two looking through the list of new modules to see what is available. There is also an RSS feed for module updates that you may want to subscribe to. If you see something of interest, you can click on the title for that module to visit the modules homepage on Drupal.org.

An entity instance may go through many formal states during its life as an in-memory Java object. Understanding these different states will help you know when the entity is in a consistent or inconsistent state with the back-end database, and how to reconcile these differences within a transactional context. An entity instance will typically go through many states of persistence during its lifetime as a Java object. In EJB 3.0, entity classes are completely transparent. They are created using ordinary constructors instead of the Home and LocalHome factory interfaces of earlier EJB versions. They may be freely passed to and from the EJB container and between clients, and they may be updated by a client without the overhead of a call back to the EJB container.
